Beginners Beekeeping

Beginning in 2014, at each monthly meeting, long-time beekeeper Robert Clark will provide an integrated approach to the SVB beginners sessions. He will preview what beginning beekeepers should do for each upcoming month based on an annual, local beekeeping management calendar from February through November.  Sessions will last 30 minutes: about 15 minutes for upcoming colony activities followed by 15 minutes of questions and answers.

Emphasis will be on basic principles of how honeybees respond to beekeepers’ manipulations and actions. Once these principles are understood, then the beekeeper can decide how to keep and enjoy their bees successfully. If the questions warrant it, future sessions may include breaking out into small discussion groups headed by an advanced beekeeper.

Mentor Program

Mentors are available for SVB members. We will try to provide mentors for everyone who wants one.

  • New beekeepers who have also taken a thorough beekeeping course (at SVB or elsewhere) will receive priority considering when assigning mentors.
  • The golden rule of mentoring is not to expect more of your mentor than you plan to invest yourself into the work of beekeeping.
  • Click here to view the draft Mentor Program guidelines. (These guidelines will be voted on at the next SVB board meeting.)
