August 6 Meeting – Winter Preparation, Backyard Beekeeping

Beginners session: Winter preparation, Q&A (Charles Schaffer)
As we are entering the last nectar flow of the season (knotweed), it’s time to discuss preparing the colonies for winter. Discussion will include the factors at play in the colony itself preparing to survive the winter, what you should hope to see, and what to do about it if you don’t.

Main topic: Backyard beekeeping (Brad Jones)
Small-scale, treatment-free management, rearing your own colony replacements, harvesting, and integrated pest management (IPM). Brad is a former president of Puget Sound Beekeepers Association.

Meetings are 7:00-9:00 pm on the first Tuesday of each month at Meadowbrook Interpretive Center (directions to Meadowbrook). Meetings are open to the public.
