March club meeting

We’re getting closer to spring, and that means if you’ll be receiving new packages this year, it’s getting “real” in terms of getting your hives and equipment ready. Fear not! We’ll be discussing woodenware. And if you haven’t yet arranged to buy a package, fear not! We’ll be discussing where to source bees.

As always, our regular monthly meetings are open and we’re a friendly group, so don’t feel like you have to already be a member to come check us out. We’re excited about bees and we love to share that with everyone who is interested.

8:00 – A representative from the state Dept. of Agriculture will present on what they’re doing to support local beekeepers and how the agency is responding to the invasive Asian giant hornet that has now been spotted in B.C. and Washington.

8:00 – Dave won a Honey DNA Analysis at the summer picnic. This analysis lets you know which plants your bees visited to collect the nectar. He will be sharing the results with the club along with an explanation of how the technology works and some of its limitations.

8:00 – Danny Najera, PhD will be sharing his knowledge on how bees find nectar and the waggle dance.  Dr. Najera is a professor at Green River College and a sought-after speaker at local bee clubs.  He was featured earlier this year in South Sound Magazine in an article titled “Saving Our Bees.” Read what he has to say here  https://southsoundmag.com/saving-our-bees/

September club meeting

It’s a special meeting coming up on Tuesday, September 3. It’s election night! All active members are eligible to nominate and vote for officers and open trustee positions.

In addition, the raffle drawing for the nuc will be held at this meeting! Charles has selected the best club nuc from the apiary to be given away to the lucky winner.

An enlightening beginner lesson, elections, a raffle, a fun filled social time with fellow beekeepers and a fantastic main presentation. It just doesn’t get any better than this. Guests are welcome – come check us out.

He will focus on Drone Brood Trapping & IPM (Integrated Pest Management) for Varroa in the context of sustainable management practices, such as making nucs.

June club meeting

With the blackberry bloom about to ramp up, by our June 4 meeting your bees should have had plenty of good flying days – and plenty of blackberry to feast on. Get your supers on!

Our main speaker on June 4 is Rod Jackman, a former professional beekeeper who is now a hobbyist. Rod will be speaking on a timely topic: “Summer management of your bees.”

We will be discussing swarm management during the Basic Beekeeping portion of our meeting, which is on the minds of many right now. This month’s Apiary Demonstration will focus on that simple but nerve-racking task, queen marking. As always, bring appropriate protection to be in the apiary.

And also “as always,” the public is welcome to join our meeting and check out our fun club!
